Making of the MGM Logo

I recently stumbled upon these images of the creation of the MGM logo and was struck by their novelty. If you're like me, the footage of the lion roaring is something that you have experienced many times, but never really given much thought to. It invokes a very specific reaction, but it has always been accepted as a fixture of the cinematic experience The lion signifies the beginning of a movie, and that is all. However, the idea that there was a process behind this iconic image, and, further, that the process itself was so simple and literal is intriguing. These images draw attention to the process of an otherwise taken-for-granted addition to film.
