Malgosia Bela & Gisele Bundchen, dresses by Dior Couture, 2000

Richard Avedon is one of my favorite photographers and I’m particularly fond of his fashion portfolio. I feel like fashion photography is headed in a direction from which it will most likely never return—how many models, clothing lines, runways, and magazines are there? A model today is hardly more than a prop used to sell a product. I’m attracted to Avedon’s treatment of both model and clothes as art objects for the sake of the photograph. What I like about his work is that the final image is as much about the clothes wearing the woman as it is about the individuation of the woman in these clothes.
