Les Gisants

A friend of mine once objected that the suspension of disbelief required by Act 5 of The Winter's Tale is too great. My thoughts went immediately to these 16th century gisants by Germain Pilon. I've only ever seen them reproduced, but by all appearances, they're ravishing. The sculpted death is so lively. I want to say that they manifest something like death in the flesh, whatever that means.
